AEO explained
What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization is the work of making sure AI answer engines - Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude - name and cite your business inside the answer they generate. It is not about earning a position in a list of links. It is about being the business the assistant says out loud when a buyer asks who to hire.
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
AEO is optimizing a business so that answer engines identify it, trust it and cite it as the answer to a buying question. The unit of optimization is not a keyword - it is your business as an entity: who you are, what you do, where you do it, and who else on the web confirms it.
The practical consequence is a different target. A ranking page satisfies a person who is willing to click. An answer-ready page satisfies a system that will read, summarize and attribute - then hand your name to a buyer who never sees a results page at all.
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
GEO is the same discipline described from the other side: optimizing for generative assistants that write an answer rather than return a list. The terms are used near-interchangeably, with GEO leaning toward generative assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, and AEO leaning toward direct-answer results such as Google AI Overviews.
Do not spend time on the vocabulary. Both describe the same shift and both are won with the same inputs: a clear entity, corroborated facts, and content that answers the question in the first sentence.
How is AEO different from traditional SEO?
Traditional SEO competes for a position in a list; AEO competes for inclusion in a sentence. The tactics overlap, but the target, the win condition and the measurement all change.
| Traditional SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What is optimized | A page against a keyword | An entity and the facts that describe it |
| What the win looks like | A high position in a list of links | Being named and cited inside the answer |
| How it is measured | Positions, impressions, clicks | Whether assistants say your name - and consults booked |
| What content format wins | Long pages built to hold attention | Direct answers stated first, under headings that match the real question |
What actually changes on a site
Five things change, and none of them are cosmetic. They make your business legible to a machine that has to decide, in one pass, whether you are the safe name to give.
- Entity clarity and structured data. Schema.org markup that states plainly what the business is, who runs it, where it operates and what it sells - linked together so the assistant reads one entity instead of guessing at several.
- Answer-first content structure. Headings phrased as the question a buyer actually asks, with the answer in the opening sentences before any elaboration.
- Consistent NAP and off-site consensus. Name, address and phone identical everywhere they appear, so independent sources agree rather than contradict.
- Reviews and third-party mentions. Review velocity on the platforms buyers use, plus presence in the directories, press and roundups your competitors already occupy.
- Crawlability for AI agents. A robots.txt that explicitly allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, an llms.txt file summarizing the business in plain text, and no critical content locked behind JavaScript.
The mechanics of why those five inputs matter are covered in how AI citations work.
Does traditional SEO still matter?
Yes. The assistants are largely reading from the same index and the same corroborating sources that decide classic rankings, so a site that cannot rank usually cannot be cited either.
Treat AEO as an extension rather than a replacement. Technical health, crawlability, useful pages and real authority remain the foundation; entity clarity and answer-first structure are what convert that foundation into a mention.
Who should care about this first
High-ticket businesses where one client is worth $3,000–$50,000 should move first, because a single answer that omits you costs a whole deal rather than a fraction of a click.
In practice that means medical and aesthetic practices, dental, legal, design-build and home services contractors, and real estate teams - the categories where buyers ask for a recommendation instead of browsing. If that is your market, the Phoenix SEO and AI search engagement lays out how the work runs.
Common questions
- What does AEO stand for?
- AEO stands for answer engine optimization: optimizing a business so AI answer engines name and cite it inside the answer itself, rather than optimizing for a position in a list of links.
- Is AEO the same as GEO?
- In practice the terms are used near-interchangeably. GEO - generative engine optimization - leans toward generative assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude, while AEO leans toward direct-answer results such as Google AI Overviews. The work behind both is the same.
- How is AEO different from SEO?
- Traditional SEO optimizes a page to rank in a list of links and is measured in positions, clicks and impressions. AEO optimizes an entity to be named and cited inside a generated answer, and is measured in whether the assistant says your name - and in the consults that follow.
